Arnaud-Jean du Peyrer, Comte de Troisvilles

Arnaud-Jean du Peyrer was born in Orolon, Gascony to a merchant Jean du Peyrer and Marie d'Aramitz.

Known as one of the most famous Musketeers, Comte de Troisvilles was better known simply as Tréville. He entered into the Régiment des Guardes (the King's Guards) in 1616 as a gentleman cadet. His valor in several campaigns earned him a nomination as a cornet in the Musketeers in 1622. He led a detachment of Musketeers which captured a Spanish general and was promoted to lieutenant. He impressed the King with his valor. In 1634, he was appoineted capitaine-lieutenant of the Musketeers, second only to the King himself.

Tréville remained capitan of the Musketeers throughout the reign of Louis XIII, who died in 1643, and the reign of Richelieu, who died in 1642. He was extremely close to Louis XIII, which infuriated Richelieu.

Tréville's hotel (Hôtel de Tréville) would have been the sight to see many of the Musketeers, and those who wished to become Musketeers. He was a well respected Musketeer, not only as captain, but as a soldier.

Cardinal Mazarin, who succeeded Richelieu as Prime Minister, also hated Tréville, decided he wanted his nephew to become captian of the Musketeers. When approached to step down as captian, Tréville responded by saying that he had won the honor of captain and would die with that title.

The friction between them continued until Mazarin convinced the queen to disband the Musketeers in 1646 - to elimiate "unnecessary expenditures". All of the Musketeers were put out to the street to fend for themselves - except for two: Besmaux and d'Artagnan. They became Cardinal Mazarin's personal guards.

In 1656, Mazarin approached Tréville about rebuilding the Musketeers - his nephew as captain. Tréville would not give up his post. Through some deceit, Mazarin was able to get Tréville to retire in 1657 and return to his home in Triosvilles where he became Governor of Foix.
